Roger Hoffmann

Roger Hoffmann (born 1970 in Essen/ Germany)
developed and produced as director and author
concepts, formats and projects in the fields of film,
video, theater, photography, print and electronic
music.

A style-creating principle of his works is the combination
of visuals, sound and rhythmics that leads to a strong
visual as well as narrative form.

In mid of 1980s his first Super-8 and video movies were
created as well as photographic series and paintings.
His interests lie in the influence of scientific advance-
ment and the media on our current knowledge as well as
advancements that lead to a possible future.

After his studies in communication science, philosophy
and psychology in Essen and Bochum, Hoffmann worked
as instructur for theory of film and coordinator of
multimedia projects at the University of Essen/ Germany.

During this time, further video projects were created as
well as research and publications in the fields of
communication, speech communication, film history,
theory of film and electronic music.

1998 - 2001 he is co-founder and editor of the magazine
SEMA that covers the fields of communication, speech
communication and cultural aspects.

Due to his employment at the University, contacts to
other communication designers and film workers were
created for project cooperations.

In 2001 he founded R-Hoffmann-Film as representation
for his filmic projects.

In 2001 Hoffmanns contacts to the field of electronic
music lead to communications with the composer Michael
Zorn (Berlin) and the label Lux Nigra in order to create
a music video together.

In February 2002 the video "Karneval" is finalized.
In in the same year, the filming of the video "Marianen-
graben" followed, which is published 2003 by Zorn as
an EP bearing the same name.
Also in 2003 the video "Schneefreunde" is finished and
published.

Besides music videos, documentaries and multimedia
installations are created for dance- and theaterpro-
ductions in Cologne, Essen, Bochum and Duisburg.

In 2006, the project "Supercity“ was founded together
with friends and artists, with the goal of drawing
together the electronic music scene in Essen and to
draw up projects like a CD compilation series and live
performances.

In 2007, Roger Hoffmannn, in association with the
theatrical group "glassbooth", implemented the film-
and theatrical project "Kubus", inspired by an experi-
mental television film by Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl
from 1969.
The production opened on October 27, 2007 in Essen
and toured successfully through the Ruhr area cities
Essen, Bochum, Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen.

In the spring of 2008 Hoffmann produced the film
"Imago". He consults the fashion label "Tolllkirsche"
at the live presentation of the fashion collection,
documented under the title "Tolllkirsche präsentiert
Arachnoir: Kollektion 2008/09".

Furthermore the third Supercity-Compilation gets
published incl. the Supercity-Video.

In October of 2008 Hoffmann presented a collection of
his work at the "Zollverein School of Management and
Design" in Essen.

In Spring 2009 the CD Supercity Vol. 4 is compiled and
published.

Roger Hoffmann created the area "Visualizations of the
techno culture" for the exhibition "Techno - A look back
into the future" that is dedicated to 20 years of techno
culture. The Exhibition opend in autumn 2009 and runs
until spring 2010.
He is the author of several articles for the exhibition,
published, amongst others, in the corresponding
catalogue.

in 2009 Hoffmann is invited to create a new study section
of film- and television production at the University
of Duisburg-Essen. He becomes in the process a lecturer
in theory, technology and practice of audio-visual media.

In 2011 he become also a lecturer in theory, technology
and practice of audio-visual media.

Roger Hoffmann currently lives in Essen and Berlin.
